After the defeat of the Aztecs, he joined the Spanish military that today it is called southern Mexico, Guatemala. He settled in Guatemala he received long term leases for land uses like gold mining and farming. The king of Spain granted encomiendas as a reward for the crown.
By around 1530’s , he entablished hisself as a leading citizen of the primary town. Later in like 1540’s a earthquake destroyed Santiago. In 1530 Juan traveled to Spain and he meet someone named Beatriz Sanchez de Ortega which he married the same year. Then they had two sons which their name was unknown.
Some of the ships that were used for the trade were used for him to explore the Pacific.
Juan died on January 3, 1543. Cabrillo was buried on the island of California, no one has ever found Cabrillo’s gravesite. They don’t know which off shore island he is buried on. Some people think he was buried on San Miguel island. One scholar argues that Cabrillo was not laid to rest on any of the northern channel island.
